Discovering Perthshire. Where and what is Perthshire?
The County of Perth is the heart of Scotland.
Geographically, the county extends from Strathmore in the east, to the Pass of Drumochter in the north, Rannoch Moor and Ben Lui in the west and Aberfoyle in the east.
The stunning hills, mountains, and rocky outcrops are thanks to the Highland Boundary Fault Line, running from Arran to Stonehaven. The Fault Line creates the distinction between the Lowlands and the Highlands. The Highland Boundary Fault Line is one of three in Scotland. Such is the location of the fault, the Perthshire town of Comrie is known as Shaky Town, experiencing many tremors in the past. The site of one of the world’s first seismometers was at Earthquake House in Comrie, produced by Scot, James David Forbes.
Scone Palace was once the coronation site of the Kings of Scotland. Where Macbeth, Robert the Bruce and Charles II were crowned, the palace has over 1000 years of history.
The Stone of Destiny – the Stone of Scone, is an ancient symbol of Scotland’s monarchy and was used in the inauguration of Scottish kings. The Stone of Destiny now rests at the Perth Museum, in the centre of Perth, having recently been used for the coronation of both Queen Elizabeth II and King Charles III.
The seventh longest river in Britain (longest in Scotland – 119 miles long), the Tay, dissects the region, heading through the centre of Perth, and out to Dundee and the North Sea.
Three major Scottish companies are located in Perthshire – Highland Spring, Stagecoach and SSE.
Perth is known as the Fair City, which is a tribute to Walter Scott’s book, The Fair Maid of Perth. Previously, it was debatable if Perth was a city, but officially became one in 2012 for the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee.
In medieval times, Perth was known as ‘St John’s Toun’, which is why its football team is called St Johnstone.
Perth was the capital of Scotland from the 9th to the 13th century. It was even Scotland’s second city until government changes in 1975.
A fascinating, action-packed region, discovering Perthshire awaits for meetings, events, team building, an incentive, or exhibition.
